Henry Ford College Science Center

Henry Ford College Science Center

Dearborn, MI

This $15 million upgrade project expanded the existing 50,000 square foot building from the 1960s, providing the college with a modernized facility to support high demand programs, as well as position students for transferring to four-year colleges and universities. The 19,000 square foot addition features four new state-of-the-art laboratories, two new life science classrooms, and incubator/cold rooms, and tissue culture storage, as well as offices, study spaces, and lecture halls.

Designed in the spirit of LEED, the new center incorporates several green principles and strategies. In addition to energy-efficient mechanical systems, the building also features a green roof to reduce HVAC needs, as well as a ground-level rain garden to improve the quality of storm water runoff. Both features also double as outdoor laboratories for students.

In addition to providing MEP engineering and commissioning services, SES also helped Henry Ford College to qualify for energy programs. Utilizing our experience in performing utility rebate calculations, building energy simulations, and detailing engineering analyses necessary for such programs, we were able to get the college a $60,000 rebate from DTE Energy through their Your Energy Savings (YES) program, as well as a $14,000 tax deduction through the Energy Policy Act, Section 179D.
