Madonna University Heritage & Welcome Center

Livonia, MI

Madonna University’s new $9 million Welcome Center and Felician Sisters of North America Archives and Heritage Center will act as hub for recruiting students and celebrating the school’s history. The 28,000SF facility will serve as the new home to the Office of Admissions, and also features a large great room for events, art gallery, café, staff offices, and reading rooms. The Felician Sisters of North America Heritage Center & Archives, located on the lowest level, provides museum-quality conditions for the preservation of items from a variety of different Felician archives across the country.

SES introduced Madonna University to geothermal technology, educating officials about how it works and proposing it as an excellent HVAC solution for this project. It posed a bit of a challenge when designing the humidity levels, temperature controls, and other unique conditions required for the archives. However, through careful planning, our engineers were able to come up with solutions that allowed the sensitive space to be served by the geo system, avoiding a separate system.

Design of the great room and art spaces were also a challenge. Madonna wanted these areas to be able to be utilized as a single large space, or multiple, smaller spaces. This meant that AV systems, temperature zones, lighting had to be designed to work across three zones as one, but also as three separate zones. To accomplish this, SES worked closely with all team members to ensure the space was carefully coordinated across all disciplines.
